Rwanda Rwandan President Paul Kagame laid the foundation stone for the extension of Rwanda39s largest cementproducing factory, CIMERWA, on 17 January 2013. The expansion of the factory follows a deal in December 2012 that saw South Africa39s largest cement firm, PPC Pretoria Portland Cement, acquire a 51 share of CIMERWA39s equity with a buyout of US69.4m.

The South Africans took over CIMERWA majority stake in December 2012 for some 61m. At the time, Cimerwa had production capacity of 100,000 tonnes of cement per annum but demand in Rwanda was 350,000 tonnes. Cimerwa expects its cement plant upgrade to stabilise the domestic market after shortages sent the price of a bag of cement up nearly 50 per cent in recent months. Rwanda has resorted to importing cement from neighbouring countries such as Uganda and Tanzania to cover the shortages.

Unveiling the new CIMERWA Bulk Cement service at a meeting in Kigali, company CEO, Bheki Mthembu, said its bulk truck will unlock some of the bottlenecks encountered with bagged cement. The vehicle will deliver cement directly to the construction site, pump it in the silo after which construction sites can instantaneously batch it.
